4. Dandelion

Description- Pollution is a real issue and in the US, buildings add up to over 39% of all carbon emissions, with combustion of fossil fuels for heating and cooling being the major contributor of most of these. In the Northeast, heating and cooling is essentially a carbon-intensive task with high use of fuel oil and propane gas during the cold months and the major down slide to it is that the homeowners feel a financial strike when or if the fuel prices rise during a long cold winter. For the same, Dandelion works to reduce heating costs and carbon emissions with geothermal energy. They aim to make it easier and affordable to heat and cool homes with a clean, free, abundant, and renewable resource: geothermal energy. They use equipment that assure high performance and does not demand high costs on installation so that it assists homeowners in saving money and help the environment by moving away from conventional heating and cooling methods. Their Geothermal system is a cleaner and shows great results with lower and steadier home energy costs while the only change is that they use the energy under a homeowner’s yard. The team is at present signing customers in New York state and is excited to advance geothermal energy as a clean and abundant choice that can help the planet.

Interesting Facts:

  • It took two years for them to prototype labs and techniques, build a drilling technology and such, after which Dandelion became an independent company.
  • The basic idea is that the ground is cooler than the air in the summer and warmer than the air in the winter which makes Dandelion a great solution for home heating and cooling.
  • Geothermals typically took large up-front installation fee which has discouraged consumers, so their major task was to make Dandelion more affordable.
  • After many months of contemplation, creating and testing, Dandelion finally built and settled on  a slender drill that took up less space and could dig a hole a few inches wide, producing less waste and practically left the backyard undisturbed.
  • They are now an independent company.
