Audrey Hepburn was a movie star, ballet dancer, model and humanitarian who suffered such extreme starvation as a child during the Nazi occupation of Holland that she came out of World War II weighing only 88 pounds in a 5’6″ frame. She was extremely thin all her life. She died at age 63 of a very rare cancer of her appendix.

Known for her iconic style, the woman who brought Holly Golightly and Eliza Doolittle to life on screen spent her later years as a humanitarian. She traveled the world as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, raising awareness for starving children. Her work came to an end when she developed colon cancer and died from the disease in 1993. She had undergone surgery in November of 1992, the New York Times reported. Her death from cancer was announced by Unicef, the United Nations Children’s Fund, for which she had been a special ambassador since 1988.
